York is one of Europe's most beautiful cities and a fascinating place to visit. Narrow cobble stoned streets give way to modern shopping precincts, whilst the pride of York, the magnificent Minster, looks down on a city that owes much to the builders of Viking and Roman Britain. York is one of the very few English towns and cities to retain its fortified walls, a nearly complete circuit of some 2.5 miles which are open to walkers from dawn until dusk.
The fascination of York is not only in its architecture - other interesting places to explore include the Jorvik Centre and the unique Castle Folk Museum with its reconstructed street scenes of old York.
The National Railway Museum houses a spacious and comprehensive collection of Britain's railway history. Their latest attraction is the Yorkshire Eye, a scaled down version of the magnificent London Eye. The Yorkshire Museum, set in the grounds of the ruined St. Mary's Abbey displays Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and medieval treasures.
Other attractions include theatres, cinemas and nightlife. York is one of the north's best shopping centres, with modern department stores and charming small shops offering high quality crafts, antiques and rare books.
According to sources, York is the most haunted city in Europe. There are dedicated Ghost Walk tours every evening visiting some the most haunted places within the City Walls.
Within driving distance are all the many intriguing places for which Yorkshire is renowned, the Dales of Herriot and Summer Wine Country, the rugged moors of the Brontes and the White Horse of Kilburn on the flank of the Hambleton Hills. Not far distant is Castle Howard (the real Brideshead) and the port of Whitby with its links with Dracula and Captain Cook. Other coastal resorts are also to be found at Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey.
