Full Listing Of THE PORT ROYAL HOTEL and Russian Tavern
THE PORT ROYAL HOTEL and Russian Tavern
Description A waterfront traditional stone-built village inn at Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute. There are 5 economical cottage-style guestrooms. The restaurant is a re-creation of a Russian Tavern of Tsarist times serving fine Russian cuisine, local Real Ales direct from the cask, Russian beers, wines and vodkas. Fresh seafood is supplied by the neighbouring fisherman.
A typical evening meal could consist of a large fresh salad of wild garlic leaves, celery, tomatoes, roquet,
marinaded black olives, peppers, lemon and capers. This arrives on the table with freshly baked bread and butter while you await the Entree being cooked. A typical Entree could be freshly cooked langoustines caught from the bay outside with a dip of real mayonaisse, possibly favoured with garlic or lime. The main course might be the house flagship Beef Strogonoff made with mature beef from Orkney, marinaded in French wine and cooked with smoked paprika, wild fungi and smetana. This comes with a potato and onion cake, (a latke) topped with red cabbage cooked with apple, and some wonderful sauerkraut prepared in the French style with white wine.
Or perhaps vegetarians would prefer tartlettes filled with beans, wild mushrooms and buckwheat, and gratineed with Emmental cheese. The fisherman always supplies his catch of the day, and plaice, codling and seabream are caught regularly. Dessert could well be frozen yogurt made on the premises, whipped into a wonderful ice-cream with fruits of your choice...and maybe a liqueur too! Or perhaps you might prefer the chocolate gateau, or the Pavlova, both made on the premises.
Outside the restaurant,
curlews, oyster-catchers and seals share the beach to the fore, while wild deer graze the golf course to the rear. The views across Kames Bay to the Argyll hills are truly stunning. A new marina is being constructed just 100 metres from the hotel.
Both Les Routiers and The Campaign for Real Ale independently have awarded the tavern "Scottish Pub of the Year".
The ISLE OF BUTE lies between Argyll in the north, and the Isle of Arran to the south, in the mouth of the River Clyde. Access is via ferry from Wemyss Bay, (pronounced "weems") a village on the A78, the coast road between Glasgow and
and Ayr. Wemyss Bay is linked by rail direct to Glasgow International Airport (alight at Paisley) and Glasgow Central station. Preswick Airport has a direct FASTBUS 585 to Wemyss Bay.
The north of the Isle of Bute is linked to Argyll by a minor ferry, which means the island makes an ideal stepping stone from Ayshire or Glasgow into the highlands and islands of West Scotland.
The Isle of Bute has lost coves and bays suitable for BBQs and boating, long stretches of sandy beach ideal for horse-riding, deep long freshwater lochs to fish pike and trout, a fine Viking castle to explore, a magnificent Victorian stately home with extensive gardens at Mount Stewart, standing-stones, an iron-age fortified village, and an early Celtic chapel at St. Blanes.
The south of the island is rolling green fields and woods, while the north of the island is true highland wilderness with deer, hare and wild goats. The bird-life is very rich. The island is ideal for those seeking peace and tranquility, and there are extensive walks, and lanes for happy cycling.
